2026
A solo exhibition exploring the archaeology of Northumberland at the Old School Gallery in Alnmouth 12th June – 13th July 2026.
There is something magical about the landscapes of Northumberland. The past feels close to the surface, its echoes still legible in the forms of the land. These vestiges bring a particular sense of place, a connection that draws us back time and again. In Scarpland, Rose reflects the curiosity and excitement of researching and exploring these different archaeological sites.
The collages of Scarpland trace some of Rose’s research and recent explorations of the area. They trace experiences of archaeology at sites where rock art swirls and gathers on great boulders, the great curving hulks of hill forts, and the rhythms of time and tide on the coast. There are two new pieces about the archaeology of Hepple Wilds (as part of the ‘Rewilding’ Later Prehistory Project) and collages originally made to illustrate ‘Sea Change’ by poets Katrina Porteous and Phoebe Power (Guillemot Press).
As part of the event there will be an event at the Alnmouth Festival featuring a discussion between Rose, poet Nancy Campbell and archaeologist Melanie Giles. ‘Of Sea and Scarp‘ takes place 2pm on the 21st June.
Rose will be running a creative workshop on the 24th June at the Old School Gallery, exploring narratives and scales of time along the coast at Alnmouth. The day will include a walk with drawing and discussions followed by an afternoon of collaging. Places are limited – tickets available here.
