‘Rewilding’ Later Prehistory

2025-2026

Rose was commissioned by Dr Anwen Cooper from the ‘Rewilding’ Later Prehistory Project at Oxford Archaeology to undertake creative work as part of collaborations with Knepp Wilding and Hepple Wilds.

The UKRI funded ‘Rewilding’ Later Prehistory Project is exploring how understandings of archaeological wildlife can inform contemporary environmental concerns. Rose has been working with the project to undertake research, and find ways of communicating different perspectives on environmental change through time.

At Knepp Wilding, Rose has worked alongside the RLP team and staff from Knepp to write a book on archaeological research and perspectives of the sites changing landscapes. ‘Archaeology and Wilding at Knepp‘ contains an overview of the archaeology of Knepp, as well as explorations of particular specialist investigations, including ancient horses, soils and plants. The book is illustrated with new work by Rose and artist Miranda Creswell from artworks they have made for the project. The book is available from the shop at Knepp and the Horsham Museum. Rose’s collage ‘Knepp’ was on display as part of her exhibition ‘Gleanings: the art of the past’ at Peterborough Museum (March – May 2026).

At Hepple Wilds, Rose has worked with the team to investigate how archaeology creates particular feelings of place and local distinctiveness, working on an audio archive, film and new artwork. A new collage exploring Hepple’s extraordinary archaeology is currently on show as part of her exhibition ‘Scarpland‘ at the Old School Gallery in Alnmouth.

Rose was part of the ‘Archaeology in Wilding @ Knepp‘ workshop in September 2025, bringing together researchers and practitioners from across disciplines and from farming, policy and governance to share knowledge and experience.
