Landscape Histories for Landscape Futures

2022 – 2023

Understanding the challenges and opportunities of archaeology in nature recovery with Exeter University and the National Trust

Landscape Histories for Landscape Futures is a project led by Prof Caitlin DeSilvey (University of Exeter) and Ingrid Samuel (National Trust), which aimed to understand and communicate the challenges and opportunities of archaeology in large-scale nature recovery projects.

In her role as Postdoctoral Research Associate, Rose recorded interviews with staff from a number of National Trust properties where nature recovery is taking place. The case study sites were Killerton (Devon), Wallington (Northumberland), The Lakes (Cumbria) and Divis (Northern Ireland). Rose created a set of podcasts: one for each site, plus one featuring reflections from University of Exeter academics. These podcasts are designed to share learning across nature recovery projects, both within the National Trust and across external organisations.

You can read a summary report of the project in the Historic England Research Report Issue 25

The podcasts will shortly be available online.

Rose is continuing work on nature recovery with the University of Exeter RENEW project. She also collaborates with the Rewinding Later Prehistory Project (Oxford Archaeology).
