A collaboration with the London Chamber Soloists in Culpho, Suffolk

Rose was invited by flautist Anna Noakes to join the London Chamber Soloists (Anna Noakes, Bob Smissen and Gabriella dal’Olio) in an experimental performance with visual art responses to music, in particular Debussy’s Sonata for flute, viola and harp. Anna was interested in how audiences responded to particular pieces when visually engaged.
Two performances in Culpho church followed a day of rehearsals, during which Rose and the musicians had time to discuss how we imagine music, and how different stimuli might affect how one listens, emotionally engages and imagines. It was a fascinating process, and one which will be exciting to repeat with different pieces of music, visual practices, settings and audiences.
The artwork was made on the floor and on an easel, and included a continuous drawing on a roll down the nave, collage and painting. It was interesting what imagery emerged as the music became more familiar; how mark making responded to the stop and start of rehearsals, the repeated phrases of the music.
