Curlew!

July 2024

An animation about curlew made in collaboration with Finn Varney and the Nidderdale National Landscape. Funded by a DEFRA Farming in Protected Landscapes grant and the Dales Millennium Trust.

A two day animation workshop was run as part of a creative programme designed by Matthew Trevelyan (FiPL Officer at the Nidderdale National Landscape) to engage the children of Nidderdale with curlew. Inspired by a day of events in a nearby meadow, the kids designed all the elements needed to animate the story of the Nidderdale curlews: curlew eggs and chicks, predators and plants. Rose ran sound workshops with the kids to create the narrative and sound effects for the animation, Finn Varney worked with them to animate the scenes, and numerous other artistic creations were made, from flip books to printed bunting.

The film ‘Curlew Curlew Curlew’ was launched in Darley Memorial Hall, and has since been featured at the IUCN Peatland Conference, the Northern Curlew Awards 2024 and in 2025 will be appearing at peatland film festivals in Northumberland, Cumbria and Leeds. Have a watch below!
